    Monday January 4, 2010: Force, Acceleration and Velocity

    Here are the notes we covered in class today…

    Formulas:

    F = ma
    a = Δv/Δt
    v = Δd/Δt
    s = positive movement

    Units:

    F = Newton (1 N = 1 kgxm/s2)
    a = m/s2
    v = m/s
    S = forward movement… no t

    Tomorrow we’ll do more labs using these as well as build on our knowledge (no homework!).

    Gold Aluminum, Black Platinum and Blue Silver

    Not exactly alchemy, but still pretty cool:

    Using a tabletop laser, University of Rochester optical scientists have turned pure aluminum, gold.

    And blue. And gray. And many other colors. And it works for every metal tested, including platinum, titanium, tungsten, silver, and gold.

    I want a blue titanium toaster.

    GriffinRobotics

    I’ve created a site similar to this for our Robotics class in the Spring…

    Starting this Spring, we’ll be using this space to share our discoveries and creations in the Robotics and Design Tech classes at Spartanburg Day School.

    via GriffinRobotics.

    Should be fun, so follow along!

    Make: Science Room

    Fantastic lab and activity ideas you can hack and perform at home (always be safe, of course)…

    Greetings citizen scientists, budding biohackers, and backyard explorers! We think you’ll find the Make: Science Room a fun and useful resource. We hope you’ll use it as your DIY science classroom, virtual laboratory, and a place to share your projects, hacks, and laboratory tips with other amateur scientists.

    via Make: Online: Make: Science Room Home.

    I’m ready for school to start now that the Holidays are over… I’m thinking about doing a few of these myself over the weekend since Mrs H is working and it’s “Daddy Day Care Weekend.”  MH loves geeking out.

    I’ll post pics if we do.

    Ohm’s Law

    We’ll be studying Ohm’s Law in the Spring.

    This handy scientific law helps us to figure out voltage, resistance and current when dealing with electrical things like circuits. It’s fun.

    So, get started now with this handy vid explaining the law:

    The Known Universe: Amazing Video!

    Just Wow:

    YouTube
    - The Known Universe by AMNH
    : “The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010. “
